Legendary Artists of Mithila
मिथिलाक महान कलाकार
The pioneer of modern Madhubani painting. Sita Devi was among the first artists to bring Mithila wall painting onto paper and canvas after the 1934 Bihar earthquake, when Officer William Archer documented her murals. Her Bharni-style work — rich colours, bold outlines, mythological themes — became the face of Madhubani art globally.
🌍 Legacy
Her work is held in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and the Crafts Museum, Delhi.
The 5 Styles of Madhubani Art
Each style has distinct motifs, colours, and cultural purpose
Bharni
भरनी
Fill-colour style with bold outlines and rich natural pigments. Features mythological themes — Krishna, Durga, Ram-Sita. The most widely recognised style globally.
Kachni
कचनी
Fine line drawing — no colour fills. Intricate cross-hatching and line patterns create texture and depth. Requires the steadiest hand of all styles.
Tantrik
तांत्रिक
Sacred geometric forms, yantras, and esoteric deity symbols. Rooted in Hindu tantric traditions. The oldest and rarest style — traditionally painted only by Brahmin women.
Kohbar
कोहबर
Wedding-chamber paintings featuring bamboo groves, lotus, parrots, fish, and fertility symbols. Painted in the Kohbar ghar (bridal room) for auspicious beginnings.
Godna
गोदना
Inspired by the traditional tattoo motifs of the Mithila region. Black-and-white geometric patterns with dot work and repeated motifs. Distinct from other styles in its monochrome elegance.
