Question 1

What is Mithila?

Accepted Answer

Mithila is an ancient historical and cultural region located across northern Bihar in India and the Madhesh Province of southeastern Nepal. It is widely known as the kingdom of King Janaka, the birthplace of Goddess Sita, and the homeland of the Maithili language, Madhubani painting, and a rich cultural heritage. Mithila is one of the oldest cultural regions in South Asia, with a history dating back more than 2,500 years. Historically, it was the heart of the ancient Videha Kingdom, ruled by the Janaka dynasty. According to the Ramayana, King Janaka, the father of Goddess Sita, ruled Mithila, making the region sacred to millions of Hindus.

Today, Mithila is not an independent political state but a cultural region shared between India and Nepal. In India, it includes districts such as Darbhanga, Madhubani, Sitamarhi, Supaul, Saharsa, and Samastipur. In Nepal, it covers Janakpur, Dhanusha, Mahottari, Siraha, Saptari, and surrounding districts.

Mithila is famous for the Maithili language, one of India's constitutionally recognized languages, and the world-renowned Madhubani (Mithila) painting, a traditional folk art known for its vibrant colors and intricate patterns. The region is also known for its philosophical traditions, scholars like Vidyapati, distinctive cuisine, wedding rituals, festivals such as Chhath and Sama-Chakeva, and the ancient Tirhuta script.

Today, Mithila remains one of the most culturally vibrant regions in the Indian subcontinent.

Question 2

Where is Mithila Located?

Accepted Answer

Mithila is located in northern Bihar in India and southeastern Nepal. It lies in the fertile Indo-Gangetic plains between the Ganga River and the Himalayan foothills. The region is known for its Maithili language, Madhubani painting, ancient history, and association with Goddess Sita. Mithila occupies one of the oldest continuously inhabited cultural regions of South Asia. Although it is not an officially defined administrative area, it is widely recognized as the homeland of the Maithili-speaking people.

In India, Mithila forms the northern part of Bihar and includes major cities such as Darbhanga, Madhubani, Sitamarhi, Samastipur, Saharsa, Supaul, and Begusarai (partly).

Across the border in Nepal, Mithila extends into the Madhesh Province, with Janakpur serving as its most important religious and cultural center.

The region is crossed by numerous Himalayan rivers, including the Kosi, Kamla, Bagmati, Gandak, Kareh, and Balan, which have shaped its agriculture, ecology, and civilization for thousands of years.

Historically, Mithila was the capital region of the ancient Videha Kingdom, ruled by King Janaka. Today, despite the international border between India and Nepal, people on both sides continue to share the Maithili language, festivals, cuisine, music, and cultural traditions.

Question 3

Is Mithila a state?

Accepted Answer

No. Mithila is not a state. It is a historical and cultural region spread across northern Bihar in India and southeastern Nepal. Many people mistakenly believe that Mithila is an Indian state. In reality, Mithila has never existed as a modern Indian state. Instead, it is an ancient geographical and cultural region with a shared language, history, and traditions.

Historically, Mithila was the center of the ancient Videha Kingdom, ruled by King Janaka. Over centuries, the region came under various kingdoms and later became part of British India. After India's independence in 1947, the Indian portion of Mithila became part of the state of Bihar.

Today, the Indian side of Mithila lies entirely within Bihar, while the Nepalese side is largely within Madhesh Province.

Over the years, some organizations and social groups have demanded a separate Mithila State in India to promote Maithili language and regional development. However, no such state has been created, and Mithila remains a cultural region rather than an administrative entity.

Regardless of political boundaries, the identity of Mithila continues to thrive through its language, literature, art, festivals, and customs.

Question 4

Is Mithila a country?

Accepted Answer

No. Mithila is not a country. It is an ancient cultural and historical region shared by India and Nepal. Mithila has never been an independent country in the modern sense. It was once the center of the ancient Videha Kingdom, which flourished during the Vedic period and is mentioned in Hindu scriptures such as the Ramayana and several Upanishads.

Today, Mithila is divided between northern Bihar in India and the Madhesh Province of Nepal. Although it spans two sovereign nations, the people of Mithila share a common cultural identity rooted in the Maithili language, traditional festivals, folk art, literature, and religious heritage.

Because of this shared identity, many people refer to Mithila as a cultural nation rather than a political one. However, it has no separate government, constitution, currency, or internationally recognized borders.

The significance of Mithila lies in its civilization, not in its political status. Its influence continues through its contributions to philosophy, literature, painting, music, and Hindu traditions.

Question 5

Which State is Mithila in?

Accepted Answer

In India, Mithila is primarily located in the state of Bihar. However, Mithila itself is not a separate state. It is a historical and cultural region that includes several districts in northern Bihar and extends into neighboring Nepal. Many people mistakenly believe Mithila is a state because of its strong cultural identity. In reality, Mithila is a cultural region, much like Malwa, Bundelkhand, or Marwar.

The Indian portion of Mithila lies almost entirely within Bihar. Major districts include Darbhanga, Madhubani, Sitamarhi, Samastipur, Supaul, Saharsa, Madhepura, Araria, Kishanganj, Purnia (partly), Khagaria (partly), and Begusarai (partly).

These districts share the Maithili language, traditional customs, Madhubani painting, festivals such as Sama-Chakeva and Jur Sital, and the historical legacy of the ancient Videha Kingdom.

Over the years, some organizations have demanded the creation of a separate Mithila State, arguing that it would help preserve regional culture and improve governance. However, no such state currently exists.

Therefore, while Mithila has a distinct cultural identity, administratively it remains part of Bihar in India.

Question 6

Is Mithila different from Bihar?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Mithila is distinct from Bihar — though it exists within it. Bihar is a modern Indian state with administrative boundaries, while Mithila is an ancient cultural region with its own language (Maithili), script (Tirhuta), art (Madhubani painting), festivals (Chhath, Kojagara, Sama-Chakeva), and culinary traditions. Think of it like Catalonia within Spain: a unique identity inside a larger political unit. The Maithil people have a strong cultural consciousness that predates the formation of the modern Indian state. Mithila also spills across the border into Nepal, whereas Bihar does not.

Question 7

Where is Mithila, the birthplace of Sita?

Accepted Answer

According to the Ramayana, Goddess Sita was born in Mithila, the kingdom ruled by King Janaka. The birthplace is traditionally identified with Janakpur, located in present-day Madhesh Province, Nepal, where the famous Janaki Temple stands.

Question 8

What is Madhubani Painting?

Accepted Answer

Madhubani painting, also known as Mithila painting, is one of India's oldest and most celebrated folk art traditions. Originating in the Mithila region of Bihar and Nepal, it is characterized by intricate patterns, bold outlines, natural colors, and themes inspired by mythology, nature, festivals, and daily life. In 2007, Madhubani painting received a Geographical Indication (GI) Tag, recognizing its unique cultural heritage. Madhubani painting is more than a decorative art form—it is a visual expression of the history, beliefs, and traditions of the Mithila region. For centuries, women painted the walls and floors of their homes during weddings, festivals, and religious ceremonies using natural pigments made from flowers, leaves, charcoal, turmeric, rice paste, and minerals.

According to popular tradition, the art originated during the wedding of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita, when King Janaka asked artists to decorate the city of Mithila. Although this story belongs to mythology, archaeological and historical evidence suggests that the tradition evolved over many centuries as part of Mithila's domestic and ritual culture.

The paintings are known for their distinctive style—bright colors, double outlines, geometric patterns, and the complete filling of empty spaces with floral or symbolic motifs. Common subjects include Rama and Sita, Radha-Krishna, Lord Shiva, Goddess Durga, the Sun, Moon, fish, lotus, peacocks, trees, and scenes from everyday village life.

Originally painted on mud walls and floors, Madhubani painting is now created on handmade paper, canvas, cloth, wood, ceramics, and textiles. Today it has become internationally recognized, providing livelihoods to thousands of artists while preserving the cultural identity of Mithila.

Question 9

Why is Mithila famous?

Accepted Answer

Mithila is famous for being the birthplace of Goddess Sita, the kingdom of King Janaka, the Maithili language, Madhubani painting, rich philosophical traditions, and its unique festivals, cuisine, and cultural heritage. Mithila is one of South Asia's most historically and culturally significant regions. It is best known as the birthplace of Goddess Sita, making it a sacred destination for millions of Hindus. The city of Janakpur, traditionally regarded as Sita's birthplace, attracts pilgrims from around the world.

The region is also celebrated for Madhubani (Mithila) painting, a globally recognized folk art distinguished by intricate designs, symbolic motifs, and vibrant colors. This art form has received international appreciation and provides livelihoods for many artisans.

Another reason for Mithila's fame is the Maithili language, one of India's classical literary languages, enriched by the works of poets like Vidyapati. The region has also made major contributions to Indian philosophy, particularly the Nyaya school of logic.

Mithila's traditional festivals—including Chhath Puja, Sama-Chakeva, Jur Sital, and Vivah Panchami—along with its distinctive cuisine, wedding rituals, and hospitality, further strengthen its cultural identity.

Together, these elements make Mithila a region renowned for its spirituality, art, scholarship, and living traditions.

Maithili has its own script called Tirhuta (also known as Mithilakshar), though today it is commonly written in Devanagari. The language has a rich literary tradition dating back to the 12th century, most famously through the poet Vidyapati. It is the second most spoken language in Nepal after Nepali. There are active movements to have it recognised as a classical language of India.

Question 13

Made from fine cotton or silk fabric in white or saffron colours, the Paag is worn by men during weddings, religious ceremonies, and cultural events. It is especially prominent during the Vivah Panchami festival in Janakpur. Question 20

What is the History of Mithila?

Accepted Answer

Mithila is one of the oldest cultural and historical regions of South Asia, with a history spanning more than 3,000 years. It was the heart of the ancient Kingdom of Videha, ruled by the legendary King Janaka, the father of Goddess Sita. Over the centuries, Mithila became renowned for its philosophy, education, literature, art, and spiritual traditions, and it continues to preserve this rich heritage across northern Bihar in India and southeastern Nepal. The history of Mithila begins in the late Vedic period, when the Kingdom of Videha emerged as one of the most important political and intellectual centers of ancient India. Ancient texts such as the Shatapatha Brahmana, Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, Ramayana, and several Puranas describe Mithila as a prosperous kingdom known for wisdom, learning, and righteous governance.

According to tradition, the kingdom was founded by King Nimi, whose descendants established the Videha dynasty. The most famous ruler was King Janaka, celebrated as both a philosopher and an ideal king. His court became a center of learning where scholars such as Yajnavalkya and Gargi Vachaknavi discussed profound philosophical questions that later became part of the Upanishads.

Mithila gained lasting fame through the Ramayana, where it is described as the birthplace of Goddess Sita and the place where she married Lord Rama. This association made Mithila one of Hinduism's most sacred cultural regions.

During the medieval period, Mithila flourished as a center of Nyaya philosophy, Maithili literature, and Sanskrit scholarship. Thinkers such as Gangesha Upadhyaya developed Navya Nyaya, while poets like Vidyapati enriched Maithili literature with devotional and lyrical works.

Later, the Darbhanga Raj played an important role in preserving education, music, temples, libraries, and cultural institutions. You might hear 'I am Maithil' (identity), 'I speak Maithili' (language), or 'I am from Mithila' (place). Accepted Answer

It is called Mithila painting because the art originated throughout the historical Mithila region, not just in Madhubani district. The name "Madhubani painting" became popular after the art gained international recognition, but "Mithila painting" more accurately reflects its geographical and cultural origins. Many people believe Madhubani painting began only in Madhubani district, but this is only partially true. Historically, the tradition developed across the wider Mithila region, including present-day districts such as Darbhanga, Madhubani, Sitamarhi, Supaul, Saharsa, and Janakpur in Nepal.

The name Madhubani painting became widely used during the 1960s when government agencies encouraged rural women to transfer traditional wall paintings onto paper after a severe drought. Since many of the early commercial artists came from villages within Madhubani district, buyers and researchers began referring to the art by the district's name.

However, art historians increasingly use the term Mithila painting because it better represents the shared artistic traditions of the entire cultural region. Today both names are widely accepted, although many scholars consider "Mithila painting" the more historically accurate term.

Whether called Madhubani painting or Mithila painting, the art remains a symbol of the language, traditions, and cultural identity of the Maithili people.

Question 47

Why was King Janaka Famous?

Accepted Answer

King Janaka was famous for being the righteous ruler of Mithila, the adoptive father of Goddess Sita, and one of ancient India's greatest philosopher-kings. He is praised in the Ramayana, Upanishads, and other Hindu scriptures for his wisdom, justice, spiritual knowledge, and devotion to dharma. King Janaka is remembered not only as the father of Sita but also as one of India's greatest philosopher-kings. He ruled the ancient Kingdom of Videha, with Mithila as its capital, and became renowned for combining excellent governance with deep spiritual wisdom.

In the Ramayana, Janaka gained everlasting fame by organizing Sita's Swayamvara, where Lord Rama won Sita's hand in marriage after lifting and breaking Lord Shiva's divine bow.

Beyond mythology, Janaka appears prominently in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, where he hosts philosophical debates attended by some of the greatest sages of the Vedic age, including Yajnavalkya and Gargi Vachaknavi. These discussions explored profound questions about the soul, reality, knowledge, and liberation.

Janaka is often described as an ideal ruler who governed efficiently while remaining detached from material possessions. Because of this, many Hindu traditions regard him as a Rajarshi—a king who attained the wisdom of a sage.

His reputation as a just ruler, patron of learning, and spiritual seeker has made him one of the most respected figures in Indian civilization.
